How to get the text of a web page

  1. Copy the address of a public web page from your browser and paste it above.
  2. Choose "Main content" for the article only, or "Whole page" for every visible text, menus and footers included. Pick a layout: paragraphs, one line per paragraph, or one block.
  3. Turn on "List link addresses" to number the links and list their addresses at the end, or "Describe images" to keep image descriptions.
  4. Press Extract text, check the word and character counts, then copy the text or download it as a .txt file.

Questions and answers

What do I get?

The words of the page as plain text: headings and paragraphs on their own lines, list items with "-" or their number, table rows with tab-separated cells (they paste into a spreadsheet), and code with its spacing. No HTML, no Markdown symbols, nothing escaped.

How is this different from a URL to Markdown converter?

Markdown adds symbols for headings, bold text, links, and tables. This tool adds none: you get only the words, ready for a word counter, a document, a translation tool, a read-aloud app, or an AI prompt. If you want the structure as Markdown, use a URL to Markdown converter instead.

What is the difference between "Main content" and "Whole page"?

Main content keeps the article or the documentation text and leaves out menus, headers, footers, sidebars, cookie notices, share buttons, related posts, and comments. Whole page keeps every text a visitor can see in the page body.

Can I keep the links?

Yes. "List link addresses" puts a number like [1] after each link and lists the full addresses at the end, so you can cite your sources. Footnote markers and heading anchors are always left out.

Why is a page empty or refused?

Some sites build their pages with JavaScript in the browser, so the page sent to tools has no text; the extractor says so instead of returning nothing. Pages behind a login, a paywall, or a bot check cannot be read either.

How are the counts made?

Words and characters are counted in the text you get, title included and the link list left out. Reading time assumes 230 words a minute. Tokens are an estimate for AI tools: about 4 characters per token, one per character for Chinese, Japanese, and Thai.

Is it free? Are there limits?

It is free and needs no sign-up. To keep it fair for everyone, each visitor can extract a limited number of pages per minute, and very large pages are read up to a size limit.

Do you store the pages or my links?

No. The page is read once, turned into text, and sent back to your browser. Nothing is saved.

Can I use it from a script?

Yes. Open api/run?url=<page address>&format=text next to this page to get the plain text, or leave out format=text to get JSON with the title, counts, and text.
